Birth Certificate Apostille – Simple New York Requirements

Getting an Apostille for a birth certificate depends on where the birth happened. Here is the quick guide so you know exactly what you need.

If the birth happened in New York City

(Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island)

To get an Apostille, you must have:

• Long‑form birth certificate

• Letter of Exemplification

Important:

• The dates on both documents must match

• Short‑form certificates are not accepted

• Older certificates are not accepted

• If you don’t have the Letter of Exemplification → NYC will reject the Apostille

If the birth happened outside NYC (any NY State county)

You can use:

• A certificate from the local town/city clerk, OR

• A certificate from New York State Department of Health (Albany)

Important:

• Local certificates must be authenticated by the County Clerk (We handle this part for you)

• Some counties require a new certificate

• No Letter of Exemplification is needed for non‑NYC births

For all other NY counties
